Euro 2022 League

Pledgeball have launched the Euros Pledgeball League campaign to rally fans to show support for their teams by joining the movement to #protectwhereweplay during the Women’s European Championship.

Through Pledgeball fans make pro-environmental pledges for their national team to see which country can win not just on the pitch but off it as well. The champion of the Women’s Euros Pledgeball League will be the team whose fans pledge to save the most carbon emissions by committing to actions that positively impact our planet.

There are also prizes up for grabs with the opportunity to WIN a digital copy of FIFA 22 and one of two signed copies of Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch. Head to the Pledgeball webpage for upcoming Euros fixtures to pledge during the tournament.

Katie Cross, Founder of Pledgeball said ‘Fans are drivers of change – there are so many examples of this from the Women’s game, starting with them playing to raise money for war charities in WW1 shortly before the 1921 ban’

‘Rallying together to protect the places we watch and play football will make significant change. I can’t wait to see fans (and players!) joining us in doing this during Euro 22. I also can’t wait to see the football. It’s coming home I’ve heard’.

Pledgeball partners, The Football Supporters Association (FSA) are also a part of this campaign and are encouraging all fans to participate in order to see their national team win the Pledgeball League.

Deborah Dilworth, Women’s Game Network Manager for the FSA said ‘It is a pleasure to team up with Pledgeball.  Football supporters are such a power for change and supporters groups across the country do so many amazing things for good causes.’

I can’t wait to see fans joining in with this league during Euro22.  Come on England.

Check out the FSA’s Euros guide for information on the teams and the stadiums and keep an eye out for Pledgeball as they’ve contributed sustainabilityinformation throughout!

Football Supporters Europe (FSE) are also supporting the Pledgeball campaign during the Euros to encourage as many fans as possible across Europe to get involved.

Another campaign kicking off this summer is The Ball, a campaign spearheaded by our partners Spirit of Football. On 10th July, Katie Rood will be launching the campaign at Battersea Park. The Ball will travel across the globe before heading to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, showcasing climate action and garnering pledges along the way!

Don’t forget after the Women’s Euros, The Pledgeball League will be restarting as the new season begins! Will we see Bristol City retain the top spot or will a new champion emerge next season?

Bristol City FC clinch the title!

@reachfeverpitch

With a dominant performance throughout the season, the Robins have stormed the Pledgeball League surpassing clubs such as Manchester Utd, Leicester, Burnley and Huddersfield to come away with the Pledgeball League Winners 21/22 title, pledging to save a massive 345,421kg of CO₂e per year! This is the equivalent of taking 74 cars off the road.

City CEO Richard Gould said: “We’re delighted that our fans have won the inaugural Pledgeball league. It shows that City fans really do care about the world and local environment. Partnering with Pledgeball has been a pleasure and we look forward to the competition next season.

“Pledgeball Founder Katie Cross said “I am really delighted to be presenting this first Pledgeball League Award to Bristol City. The support shown by the club and fans has been incredible- real trailblazers.

Bring on next season!”

Cross goes on to say “Thank you to every single football fan or sports fan that pledged to save emissions in the Pledgeball League this season. We had 531 different pledgers and saved a grand total of 3,951,420kg of CO₂e, which is the equivalent of taking a huge 851 cars off the road. Thank you also to Sustainable Clarets and Huddersfield Town supporters Association for partnering with us this season”.

“I also want to give a special shout out to Whitehawk FC who were our pilot club and were top of the pilot lockdown league last year, thank you to all their fans who supported us as we shaped Pledgeball into what it is today”

The top six of the Pledgeball League for the 2021/22 season are:

  1. Bristol City FC
  2. Whitehawk FC
  3. Charlton Athletic
  4. Huddersfield Town
  5. Burnley FC
  6. Peckham Town FC

Others in the top half of the Pledgeball League include Manchester United, Leicester City, Liverpool Women, Chelsea FC, Chelsea Women and Bristol City Women..

Pledgeball gives fans the platform to take a stand on sustainability. Fans can show support for their team by making a pledge to cut down their carbon emissions and help their club climb the Pledgeball League Table. The idea is simple: the group of fans who have pledged to save the most carbon emissions by midnight on matchday will see their club win the Pledgeball fixture and climb the league table.

The Pledgeball mechanism is backed up by current findings of climate communication research including our own research completed in 2021.

Check out Pledgeball at www.pledgeball.org

The top 5 most popular pledges that were chosen by fans included recycling everything you can, use a reusable water bottle, hanging out washing instead of using a tumble dryer, cook leftovers and minimise food waste and use recycled toilet paper!

The Pledgeball League might be over for another season but take heart football fans Pledgeball have some upcoming campaigns that you can get involved with!

The Women’s Euros League will be appearing shortly on the Pledgeball website as we edge nearer to the tournament. Pledgeball are running a campaign with their partners the FSA, which will kick off with our lightning talk at the National Football Museum on 5 July. To pledge during the Women’s Euros head to https://www.pledgeball.org/fixtures/. There are also some great PRIZES up for grabs by pledging here, including an e-copy of FIFA 22.

Another campaign kicking off this summer is The Ball. Pledgeball are key partners with Spirit of Football (check them out on Netflix) who are spearheading this campaign that kicks off on 10th July at Battersea Park. The Ball will travel across the globe before heading to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, showcasing climate action and garnering pledges along the way!

Cross finishes by saying “35 different teams League and non-league teams were part of the Pledgeball League this season – we’re looking to smash that next season! Support your team to victory in the Pledgeball League 22/23 by pledging to support them each fixture when the new season kicks off”.

The FSA partner with Pledgeball

The Football Supporters’ Association take action to tackle climate change by partnering with Pledgeball, a research-driven organisation that rallies football fans to bring about change to help to preserve our planet.

Each match day, whilst teams compete on the pitch, fans compete off the pitch by making sustainable lifestyle pledges to support their team: the team that pledges to save the most carbon emissions wins that fixture and the cumulative amount they pledge to save determines their place within the Pledgeball League.

The numbers alone give football fans significant potential to make change, and then there’s the wide reach, the passion, the drive and the stubborn hope that mean that football fans really could be the drivers of change:

  • If just one person from each of the 500,000 affiliate and associate FSA members simply reduced their thermostat to 19 degrees, the amount of carbon emissions saved is equal to taking over 32,000 cars off the road
  • 500,000 people simply switching to using a reusable cup equates to taking over 12,000 cars off the road

Then there’s the unmeasurable impact as the message filters out into each fan’s own area of influence, at work, at home and on the pitch, as well as the pressure applied to clubs, businesses and governments.

The partnership will see the FSA utilising their extensive network of associate and affiliate supporters organisations to advocate for Pledgeball amongst their members, with Pledgeball supporting this process with resources and training.

This announcement comes amid a backdrop of actions and support already demonstrated by members of the FSA: at the 2019 AGM, Pompey Supporters’ Trust raised a motion around Environmental Sustainability; earlier this year, following on from their Sustainable Stadium Campaign, Huddersfield Town Supporters’ Association partnered with Pledgeball and in the recent AGM Wolves 1877 Trust proposed a motion on Sustainability.

Katie Cross, Founder of Pledgeball, said “We have already seen the powerful influence of fans on matters from the ESL to anti-racism. The football fan community is unparalleled in its potential to drive change: the impact this community could have on the biggest challenge we have ever faced, one that will affect all that we care about from families to football, is huge.

I am delighted to be working with the FSA and its members to drive this change.”

The FSA’s Ashley Brown said “Supporters groups across the country can all play a part in by speaking to their clubs and supporting the FSA at a national level as we engage the FA, Premier League and EFL, to encourage them to strive for Net Zero Carbon emissions and increase transport options for fans.

We look forward to developing those new campaign areas and working with Pledgeball to help rollout more localised initiatives across the country via the FSA’s affiliated supporter groups.”

CLIMATE OUTREACH PARTNERSHIP

PLEDGEBALL PARTNERS WITH RESEARCHERS AND CLIMATE ENGAGEMENT  EXPERTS CLIMATE OUTREACH, TO MOBILISE THE FOOTBALL COMMUNITY TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE

We are absolutely delighted to formally announce our partnership with climate engagement experts Climate Outreach.

Climate Outreach have selected Pledgeball to be their latest Innovation Partner as part of their Climate Engagement Lab. Pledgeball will be working with Climate Outreach, making full use of their expertise, to develop and evaluate the most effective ways for Pledgeball to portray its message and to continue to assess its work.

Who are Climate Outreach?

Climate Outreach works to deepen and widen engagement with climate change beyond the ‘green bubble’. The charity’s mission is to build a social mandate for climate action. Its diverse team of social scientists and engagement specialists are passionate about putting people at the heart of addressing climate change – otherwise behaviours won’t shift and climate policies will fail.

Drawing on the skills of its international multidisciplinary team, a robust social science evidence base and nearly two decades of practical experience, Climate Outreach helps organisations develop climate initiatives that engage people more effectively.

The charity is based in the UK but works with partners worldwide, including governments, international bodies, media, academic institutions, charities, businesses and community groups.

Its Climate Engagement Lab helps UK advocates reach and engage new people – particularly those who are not widely reached by existing campaigns.

What is Pledgeball?

Pledgeball rallies football fans to tackle climate change. It addresses the issues that prevent many from engaging with climate action, the cognitive dissonance, feelings of powerlessness and consequent paralysis. Pledgeball makes the collective impact of football fans visible (of course with a bit of friendly competition – one team has to have the greenest fan base!).

The numbers alone mean that significant change could be brought about by mobilising even a small proportion of them. A mid-sized stadium worth of fans, for example, simply reducing their shower time to 5 minutes equates to taking over 2,000 cars off the road. And this is just brushing the surface of both the impact of harnessing fans and the characteristics of football fandom that make it an ideal platform from which to bring about significant sustained change.

Katie Cross, Founder of Pledgeball, said ‘We are honoured and really excited that Climate Outreach have selected us as an Innovation Partner. It is an incredible opportunity to develop skills, learn from real experts in the field and apply this to Pledgeball. The legacy of the partnership will significantly enhance our working and our already expertly-informed impact assessment.’

David Powell, Lead of the Climate Engagement Lab at Climate Outreach, said: “Climate Outreach is very excited to be working with Pledgeball to help get football fans talking and acting on climate change.  We believe this kind of national, everyday conversation is essential to deliver real climate action, and look forward to applying our expertise and research to support this cutting-edge project.”
